Fruit Comes from Abiding
Jesus said, “He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit” (John 15:5). We cannot produce lasting spiritual fruit through enthusiasm or effort alone. Life flows from the Vine.
The leafy fig tree in Mark 11 advertised life but offered no nourishment. Mark places that sign around the cleansing of the temple. The temple was filled with movement, religious activity, and noise, yet something vital was missing. Leaves may represent attendance, ministry roles, spiritual language, online appearances, or visible giftedness. These things are not necessarily wrong, but they matter only when they accompany genuine fruit.
Fruit is transformed character, persevering obedience, holy love, reconciled relationships, courageous witness, sacrificial generosity, and repentance that produces changed patterns. Leaves attract attention; fruit feeds people. Leaves may grow quickly, but fruit carries seed for future multiplication.
God is not a distant inspector demanding what He has not supplied. He is a devoted Gardener. Isaiah 5 describes a vineyard planted carefully, cleared of stones, protected, and prepared for harvest. In Christ, God has given us His living Word, His indwelling Spirit, the cleansing blood of Jesus, the fellowship of the church, and His faithful comfort and protection. If fruit is lacking, the problem is not a shortage in His provision. We must examine our response.
Scripture shows at least three kinds of fruit God desires. First is the fruit of repentance. Repentance is more than feeling sorry. It changes direction. It apologises, makes restitution where possible, stops sinful practices, accepts accountability, and replaces old patterns with obedient ones.
Second is the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Gifts may attract crowds, but fruit sustains healthy relationships and communities. God is not impressed by loud leaves if the quiet weight of Christlike character is absent.
Third is the fruit of evangelism. Jesus gives power so that we may be witnesses. This fruit grows through prayerful attention, hospitality, invitation, service, testimony, and simple courage. Not every conversation produces an immediate harvest, but every sincere act of love can become seed that God waters.
Fruitfulness can be choked by pride, hurry, distraction, isolation, shame, and fear of people. Grace meets each obstacle by drawing us back to Jesus. We remember the cross, make space for prayer and Scripture, remain connected to the church, receive forgiveness, and practise small acts of courageous obedience. Fruit needs time on the branch.
Abiding is not a mysterious experience reserved for a few. It is daily attachment to Jesus through His Word, Spirit, and people. Read Scripture slowly and respond obediently. Begin the day asking, “Lord, whom are You sending me to?” Keep short accounts with God. Protect time for rest and worship. Open your table and schedule to others. Invite someone to church or to read the Bible with you.
Evangelism must grow from our relationship with Jesus. Prayer keeps our hearts tender. The Word gives us truth to share. The Holy Spirit gives us power, wisdom, and compassion. When we abide in Christ, reaching people becomes the overflow of His life within us.
This also shapes how we make disciples. We are not inviting people to depend on our personality or strength. We are teaching them to remain connected to Jesus for themselves. A fruitful disciple learns to pray, love Scripture, worship, obey, serve, and then help someone else do the same. Our purpose is multiplication, and multiplication begins with abiding.
If you recognise barrenness, do not hide it beneath more leaves. Bring it honestly to the Gardener. Jesus does not merely inspect; He gives life. Stay near Him, stay honest before Him, and stay available to Him. Over time, blossoms appear, fruit develops, and others taste and see that the Lord is good.

Lord Jesus, keep me close to You. Let my witness flow from prayer, Your Word, and the power of Your Spirit. Produce fruit in my life that remains and multiplies. In Jesus’ name, amen.
