Power to Be a Witness
Before Jesus ascended He promised, “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me” (Acts 1:8). The mission was too great for human strength so Jesus promised power from on High.
Jesus connected spiritual power directly to witness. The Holy Spirit was not given merely so that we could enjoy a personal experience inside the church. He fills us so that we can carry Jesus beyond the walls of the church. In the Book of Acts Spirit-filled believers prayed boldly, preached Jesus, served sacrificially, crossed cultural barriers and trusted God for the miraculous.
We need this reminder because the condition of the world can easily make us fearful. Scripture often records God’s greatest works during seasons of turmoil, tension and uncertainty. Darkness does not mean that God has abandoned the harvest. It may reveal how urgently the world needs the light.
This is not the church’s hour to surrender to gloom, despair or hopelessness. We have come into the kingdom for such a time as this. Evil may appear powerful but Jesus is Lord, the church belongs to Him, and His gospel remains “the power of God unto salvation” (Romans 1:16). Our posture must be one of prayer, faith, expectation and harvest.
Amos described an extraordinary season when “the plowman shall overtake the reaper” and the one treading grapes would overtake the one sowing seed (Amos 9:13). The picture is of such abundance that one harvest runs into the next. It points us towards the unlimited ability of God. The seed of His Word still carries enough life to produce a harvest far greater than anything we have yet seen.
Yet the promise of harvest does not remove the need for workers. Fields are not gathered by excitement alone. Ploughmen, sowers, reapers and servants are needed. We are God’s fellow workers and instruments in His harvest. Every believer has a part to play through prayer, giving, serving, inviting, teaching and speaking.
The message of salvation needs a messenger. We know who Jesus is. We have experienced repentance, baptism in Jesus’ name and the infilling of the Holy Spirit. We cannot treasure this truth while keeping it sealed inside us. A full vessel that never pours out cannot refresh anyone who is thirsty.
Fear often seals our witness. We worry about rejection, awkwardness or what others may think. Yet the Holy Spirit gives courage, wisdom, compassion and the words we need. Our confidence is not in personality, education or natural ability. God works through surrendered people who are willing to pray, listen, speak and obey.
Peter proves this. He once denied that he knew Jesus, but the risen Lord restored him and reclaimed his voice. On the Day of Pentecost the man who had been silenced by fear stood and proclaimed Jesus. God used Peter’s witness to call thousands to repentance and baptism in Jesus’ name. Failure did not disqualify his voice once grace had restored him.
The parable of the talents warns us not to bury what the Master has entrusted to us. Our time, abilities, finances, facilities, opportunities and testimonies are valuable, but they are resources for the mission. God has not called us merely to preserve what we have received. He calls us to invest it so that others can know Him.
Revelation closes with the beautiful invitation, “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come” (Revelation 22:17). The Spirit works through the witnessing church. Our voice must join His invitation to a thirsty world. We cannot force anyone to respond but we can faithfully say, “Come. There is forgiveness, new life, and hope in Jesus.”
The wind of the Spirit is blowing. Let us not be found with our sails down. Ask God to awaken your voice and give effectiveness to your witness. One Spirit-led conversation can become the beginning of a transformed life, a restored family and another disciple who will reach someone else.

PRAYER
Lord Jesus, fill me afresh with Your Spirit. Break my fear and self-reliance. Give me boldness, compassion and spiritual sensitivity so I can be an effective witness. In Jesus’ name, amen.
